"I have rarely seen anyone so able to engage an audience and take them to places they didn't know they wanted to go..."
- Kath Burlinson, founder of the Authentic Artist Collective
Mr Brightside was a show exploring masculinity and mental health. But it was also well funny.
Made in 2018, supported by Greenwich Theatre London and Arts Council England, it performed at Matthew's Yard, Croydon; Greenwich Theatre; Poplar Union and Brighton Fringe Festival 2019, where we sold out shows.
Semi-autobiographical and made partly in response to workshops and interviews with people who identify as men in Croydon and London on the themes of masculinity and mental health.
This show was a learning curve and helped me to define the kind of work I would like to continue to make.
"Nick Gilbert mesmerises... portraying a clever microcosm of life"
- Broadway Baby
"Nick Gilbert... is sharp and utterly hilarious"
- Exeunt Magazine
"Nick Gilbert is unfailingly funny... he just has to take a sly look at the audience and we are laughing"
- Croydon Citizen
"It is difficult to take your eyes off Nick Gilbert when he is on stage. He is charismatic and rather glorious to watch... his comedic timing and his heartfelt joy at inhabiting a character make him worth the price of a ticket."
- Chris Grady; Producer, Coach and former General Manager of Pleasance Theatres
